The recovery of glycol-water products: used coolants (LRU) or or used heat transfer fluids (FCU)

Description of the principle

The principle is to offer a method, which is clean and energy efficient, to recover waste glycol-water products, called: used heat transfers fluids (FCU) or used coolants (LRU).

The Product

The heat transfer or coolant fluid is composed of water, glycol and corrosion inhibitors. These wear out during the lifetime of the product which thus turns into acid. This liquid is then called use heat transfer liquids (FCU) or used coolants (LRU), classified as (DID) Hazardous Industrial Waste. The waste code is: 16 01 14, according to the document: Decree No. 2002-540 on "waste classification" on the OJ of 18 April 2002, published by the Ministry of Planning and Environment.

The situation

Une partPart of the FCU and LRU are put on the French market (65,000 tonnes / year: heating, automotive, industrial ...) is not found in waste, because the used product is not always drained, but supplemented by a new product.

A significant part of drained FCU and LRU now finds itself in waste water, rivers or soil through illegal disposal.

However, volumes of FCU and LRU being collected have increased sharply in recent years. These FCU and LRU are often destroyed by evapo-incineration, which consumes a lot of energy considering that this product contains 70% polluted water.

The process

Developed by the company PCMB, this new process is to theseparate water, glycols and waste (waste inhibitors, alloy residues, corrosion products) using ultra filtration. Thus 95% of retreated volumes will be reused to manufacture new heat transfer liquids or coolants.

The company PCMB, long established, with technological know-how and equipment, is a recognized as an expert in this industry. In addition, the company has worked on this project since 1992 and appears as a precursor of the recycling of FCU and LRU.

The method has been developed and many tests have been carried out on products of different origins. The processing capacity of the facilities will be 6000 tonnes per year and the cost will be competitive as the recovery removes TGAP.

The Passy site (prefectural authorization n ° 99-1990) is conveniently located at crossroads of PARIS / MARSEILLE LYON / MILAN minimizing upstream processing transportation costs and proximity of new mcoolant manufacturers guarantees use of the retreated products at the low cost of downstream transport.
